What is RISSĄ©

Purpose of establishment

Until today, it seems that we have been creating rationality and convenience as an "awakening world". But there is a question, has "sleep" only been repose for tomorrow's activities?

But there can also be an assumption that we wake up every morning and work, so as to earn "good sleep".

In RISS, we consider the sleeping activity of human beings, looking on it as a culture of life, and we aim to enlighten people on the Sleep Culture .

It is also our aim to transmit "restitution of sleep" to the society, and contribute to the world as an academic research institute for the Sleep Culture, by delving into it from various realms and aspects.

RISS director, Ryoji Aritomi

Research Policy

How do we sleep? What is pleasant sleep? And what does sleep mean to people?

In RISS, we study about basic issues on sleep. We take up not only the case of Japanese but also of the world. Moreover, it is our interest to make further research on sleep of the past as well as sleep of the future. We set our goal to clarify the importance of the Sleep Culture, and also to suggest pleasant sleep and its surrounding environments.
